Museums or other Special Academic Buildings on Campus:The Acker Science Center provides students with facilities that open doors to new and exciting research possibilities, doubling space for biology and chemistry labs, adding a grant-funded modern language lab, computer science labs and a teacher preparation demonstration classroom. The state-of-the-art equipment and new labs provide students with the means to undertake cutting-edge research projects. Wheeling Jesuit ensures that students receive real-world experiences, not just classroom instruction, giving students the opportunity to take what they?ve learned in the classroom and expand that knowledge in the area of research. More than 100 students report to the community on their research at the annual Student Research & Scholarship Symposium. Students often cite the research opportunities as one of the reasons they enroll at Wheeling Jesuit University. Wheeling Jesuit University educational traditions thrive side-by-side with the energizing emergence of several learning resources students won't find anywhere else in the nation. In the National Technology Transfer Center (NTTC) and the Center for Educational Technologies (CET), students find internships and hands-on opportunities to study current global trends in business, technology, and education. The Challenger Learning Center simulates space missions to teach science and math to more than 13,000 K-12 students on the campus each year. The Clifford M. Lewis, S.J., Appalachian Institute, a center of research, action, analysis, and education, focuses on contemporary Appalachian challenges and opportunities. These national centers distinguish Wheeling Jesuit from other academic institutions of our size and mission, and contribute to its growing national reputation. Each center plays a key role in implementing programs that improve the health of area communities, empower the people of the region, improve, and spur economic development. Wheeling Jesuit University?s Academic Resource Center (ARC) offers all students a completely free, collaborative opportunity to test ideas, improve their academic skills, and learn how to excel in the classroom. The ARC is open 56 hours each week, operated by full-time academic support staff and peer tutors in a wide variety of academic disciplines. Assistance is available through individual instruction, study groups, or instructional computer software. The ARC helps students become more effective, independent, and active learners. While students who experience difficulty in a particular course are strongly encouraged to seek additional learning strategies at the ARC, the Center?s academic support services are available for all students interested in improving their abilities to absorb and communicate ideas. The Alma Grace McDonough Health and Recreation Center, a 107,000-square-foot facility, houses a 2,200-seat performance gymnasium, an indoor jogging/walking track, a regulation six-lane swimming pool, a fully-equipped fitness center, two racquetball courts, and a practice gymnasium. The Outdoor Athletic Complex includes regulation soccer fields, a softball field and two lighted tennis courts, as well as a track and field area that meets the standards for NCAA national meets. The complex also features a 1,400-seat grandstand and heated locker rooms. Mother Jones House One of Wheeling Jesuit University's most innovative service projects takes place at the Mother Jones House, a joint effort with the Laughlin Chapel to meet the needs of low-income families in East Wheeling. Upperclass students compete each year to live and work in the renovated Victorian house, which also serves the Catholic Neighborhood Center, shelter, soup, kitchen and free health clinic. Students cook and live communally, participating in 10 hours of service each week and taking an Urban Issues course.
